The Brown
Hyena Research Project is a self-funded non-profit organization. It is
incorporated under Section 21 of the Companies Act in Namibia. Our
registration number is 21/2002/401.

Dr. Ingrid Wiesel
came to Luderitz to do a pilot study on Sperrgebiet brown hyenas for the first time in 1995. She
returned to Luderitz in 1997 to collect data for her
Master’s thesis on the foraging behaviour of brown
hyenas at Cape fur seal colonies. She obtained
her Master’s degree at the University
of Hamburg in Germany in
1998. During the same time the Brown Hyena Research Project was founded,
although it was only registered as a Namibian non-profit organization in 2002.
From 1998 until 2005 Dr. Wiesel collected data for her PhD thesis that was
looking specifically at the hunting behaviour of
brown hyenas at seal colonies. Dr. Wiesel obtained her PhD degree in 2006.
Apart from conducting pure scientific research, she has also been involved in
many applied studies, such as the participation in Environmental Impact Assessments,
pre- to post mining impact studies and providing sound data for land use plans
e.g. with regard to the zoning of the Sperrgebiet
National Park.
